Trap Flies/Gnat/Insect With Yellow Sticky Paper

I bought the yellow sticky paper which trap insects online from Taobao (saw it on shoppee as well).

There are two holes on the paper where you can hang it up, but I don't have suitable location to hang it so I make a stand instead.

The original sticky paper is too big for my DIY stand, so I cut it into half.

Material: scissor, tape, ice-cream stick, tiny bottle and yellow sticky paper.

Worms/Maggot In Tomato Pot

Found some really tiny worms in the soil where the tomato grow.

I suspect it is fly larvae, not sure from external fly or the larvie frass.

There are the tiny red ones, which can curl up and jump up to 2cm away.

Then there are white ones, which look like maggots.

Remove algae. Probably not the most ideal solution.

Comparing Fertilizer

I experiment with the following fertilizer

  • Organic Fertilizer (2 weeks once)
  • Coffee Grounds (2 weeks once)
  • Home-made Liquid Enzyme (twice a week)

Mix with some Larvie Frass / Vermicast and Egg Shell.

The pot using Organic Fertilizer finally show some major improvements after 4 weeks, where light green leaves turn lush green with new leaves growing.

Bought this on Shoppee (about RM 40), delivery from China.

  • The light sensor is not working, always show low.
  • Most of my soil show a PH of 5, which is acidic. There is no sure way to know how accurate this test is, unless you send the soil to the lab or buy multiple test kit.
  • For moisture, most of the soil show wet or very wet, including soil I didn't water for 3+ days.

I am not quite sure how accurate or useful this device is at the moment.

Home-made Enzyme Liquid Fertilizer

My mom made this enzyme more than 3 months ago, and it smells like fruity alcohol.

I try mixing with water using 1:10~20 ratio and experiment with watering some of the plant.

Bottom Watering

Water plant from bottom up.

  • Good for thorough watering (water tends to run down to the bottom from the sides on root bound pot, without moisturing the center soil)
  • Doesn't damage the leaves (good for plant which are sensitive)
  • Top soil remain dry (discourage pest and fungus)
  • Less likely to overwater
Fill a tray with about an inch of water.

Soak the pot in water for about 30 minutes. Don't soak for long hours to avoid root rot.
